It Is Not Over Yet

NEW DOCS

Tucked away on the edges of a Danish forest, Dagmarsminde is a small nursing home for patients with severe dementia. Founded by nurse May Bjerre Eiby, it offers respite and dignity to those whose memory and cognitive abilities are slipping away. In serving their 11 residents an extraordinary prescription of hugs, conversation, laughter, and community, Dagmarsminde offers an alternative to the sterility and indifference that often comes with long-term eldercare. Here, champagne and cake are regular occurrences, because why not? Like children meeting on the playground, residents hesitantly initiate new friendships with one another as they age in this communal space. Filmmaker Louise Detlefsen captures the enduring patience of a team of caretakers as they handle tantrums and outbursts with gentleness and compassion. It’s Not Over Yet suggests a radical healthcare choice that sees beyond dementia, in hopes of honoring lives well lived to the very end.  KL
