Jaripeo
NEW DOCS
In this visually sumptuous and poetic documentary, filmmaker Efraín Mojica takes us on a journey to their hometown of Penjamillo, Mexico, to witness the annual jaripeo, or rodeo. The film focuses on two central figures to highlight the queer subculture of the hypermasculine tradition: Noé, a macho cowboy who is quietly out to his family and friends, and Joseph, an unabashedly flamboyant gay man who loves to attend the jaripeo in drag. In conversations with both, Mojica explores deep-rooted ideas of masculinity and machismo in Mexico and what it means to be a gay man there. Co-directed by Mojica and Rebecca Zweig, the film blends vérité, personal memory, and Super 8 imagery to create a vibrant examination of the ties and tensions between tradition and identity. BD
