Kid Auto Races at Venice

Thematic Extremely Rich Theater: Staging Performance and Elasticity in American Nonfiction Film

At a “baby-cart” race in Venice, California, in 1914, vehicles speed down city streets while packed crowds line the curbs. Charlie Chaplin makes his appearance as the “Tramp”—the first time the iconic character appears on film—playing a spectator who repeatedly interrupts the proceedings to the growing frustration of organizers and bystanders. Outfitted with a bowler hat and cane, he shuffles into the fray, seemingly oblivious to the officials and cameramen trying to do their jobs, let alone the oncoming traffic. While the Tramp steals the show, the actual race unfolds in the background, documenting a moment in time. ST
