King of Kowloon
NEW DOCS
The “King” is an outsider artist whose scrawled rants of graffiti found a few admirers in contemporary Hong Kong. This short film considers the King’s abundant writings and asks whether they should be considered to be art, or just poorly executed graffiti. The King is a fascinating contradiction: He is at once clownish, savvy, and lamentable. The film sensitively illustrates his quixotic struggle against modernity and standardization. A must-see for aficionados of American “outsiders” such as Howard Finster and Clyde Jones.
