Lady Kul el-Arab

NEW DOCS

Duah, a beautiful Druze Arab girl from Jerusalem, is already a finalist for the local “Lady of the Arabs” beauty pageant for Israeli-Arab women when she sets her sights on the Miss Israel competition, with its promise of cash prizes and an international modeling career. Miss Israel, however, requires that she parade in a swimsuit competition in stark violation of the standards of her religion and her community. Duah is caught in an agonizing struggle between tradition and ambition that soon involves her family, her community, and indeed the whole country, leaving viewers to ponder among other things when and if feminism can reveal itself walking a ramp in a skimpy bikini.  LB
