In their forty years together, designer Yves Saint Laurent and his longtime business partner and lover, Pierre Bergé, left an undeniable mark on the world of fashion. They also amassed an incredible collection of art. After Laurent’s death in 2008, Bergé made the fateful decision to auction off the couple’s most prized possessions, a sweeping collection of sculptures and paintings from countless artists: Degas, Vuillard, Warhol, Mondrian, Picasso, and many, many more. As he prepares for what promises to be “the auction of the century,” Bergé finds that each piece evokes memories of his partner. We see the links between Yves Saint Laurent’s designs and the art he was collecting, how significantly his surroundings shaped his runway shows. With stunning archival footage of the public and private lives of the two men, the film is at once a celebration of their accomplishments together and a portrait of letting go of the physical artifacts of a life shared.  ST
