Light Memories

Three older-looking people sit close to one another on a bench, in front of a wall of green-tinted windows.

After his paternal grandfather, a man he never met and his family never speaks of, passes away, filmmaker Misha Vallejo Prut finds a collection of photographs and slides that belonged to him. In this personal exploration of his family’s history, Vallejo Prut sets out to discover the truth behind the silences surrounding his grandfather’s absence. What he finds is an intergenerational trauma that no one wants to confront, unearthing the seeds of how the past has repeated itself and is reflected in his relationship to his own absent father. Most of the film centers around his grandmother, whom he lovingly calls Mamita. The interviews with Mamita, composed within beautiful vignettes and double exposures, are bittersweet, as she reveals awful truths. These fractured memories are pieced together to create a lyrical and visually rich examination of family secrets that no one has the emotional vocabulary to express.  BD
