Lost Landscapes of Detroit

Thematic One Foot in the Archives (Without Narration) Curated by Rick Prelinger

Innovation isn’t just happening within films themselves; it’s starting to creep into the way they’re exhibited. Live cinema—narrated by filmmakers, accompanied by musicians, incorporating audience participation—is spreading quickly. Seeking to create events rather than offer traditional screenings, live cinema stages direct encounters among makers, media, and viewers that can be different every time. Rick Prelinger will present his “interactive” feature Lost Landscapes of Detroit, which is composed largely of amateur and industrial film fragments and reconstructs Detroit’s past in an attempt to influence discussion about its future. Unlike films that are simply shown to a passive audience, this film incorporates viewer response as an integral element. Viewers will be asked to speak and shout during the film: to ask questions, identify locations, discuss events, and share their views on the future of this highly troubled, yet extremely dynamic city.  RP
