Made in Italy

NEW DOCS

A whimsical Belgian filmmaker discovers a Lumière brothers’ film circa 1897. That silent film shows the old railroad that was used to transport marble from Carrara—Italy’s famous mountaintop quarry to sculptors in the town and beyond. His attempt to pinpoint the precise location of a railway tunnel seems futile as he encounters a succession of garrulous—and mostly unhelpful—Italian elders. Family history comes abruptly to the fore as the filmmaker discovers that it wasn’t the Lumière film that was made in Italy.  LB
