How do you research the future? In The Many Sad Fates of Mr. Toledano, conceptual artist, photographer, and worrywart Phil Toledano ponders his fate. With the help of DNA tests, psychics, tarot readers, and a prosthetic make-up artist, Toledano confronts his fears. A fortune teller tells him that he’s his own worst enemy, and so he is, as he obsesses about aging, illness, and death, staging elaborate photo shoots to prophesy and envision the myriad dark ways his life might turn out. He could be interpreted as the King of the Narcissists in an Age of Narcissism, but his patient wife (“Can’t you just see a therapist like a normal person?”) indulges him. Will seeing, and experiencing, his various diseased and debased alternative selves ease his malaise?  LB
