Marcela
Invited
What started in 1980 as a Seven Up!-like survey of married life in the old Czech republic turns into an intimate testament to one woman’s survival in the face of wrenching hardship. We first meet Marcela as she’s about to be married—1980 Czechoslovakia looks like 1960s America—and eventually we meet her children, both with sad tales of their own, and learn of her divorce. Helen Treštíková spent twenty-six years chronicling Marcela’s life and its tragic turns and the result is a striking example of the raw power of documentation.
