Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise

Invited

Dr. Maya Angelou is among the standard-bearers of the African American storytelling tradition. This film places us in the poetic presence of Angelou and her peers and progeny—Cicely Tyson; Louis Gossett Jr.; James Baldwin; Malcolm X; Quincy Jones; B.B. King; her son, Guy Johnson; and so many other surprising voices touched by her grace and intellect. We learn how I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings marked a milestone in story making as memoir and how Angelou made autobiography a part of popular literature again. As we fly through her life’s moments of creative and performative glory, we revisit Stamps, Arkansas, where Angelou spent parts of her childhood, and travel from Los Angeles to Ghana, observing her at the forefront of the battles for civil rights, African independence struggles, women’s rights, and African American cultural expression. In Maya Angelou: And Still I Rise, the poet’s pen, voice, stature, and story come across with much respect, phenomenally!  DS
