Thematic Perfect and Otherwise: Documenting American Politics Curated by R.J. Cutler

Set against the backdrop of the riots surrounding the 1968 Democratic National Convention, Haskell Wexler’s daring and experimental narrative unpacks the moral obligations of bearing witness through the story of a news cameraman and his relationship with a single mother. Initially, John Cassellis is comfortable with capturing violent and volatile scenes on film; it’s his job. But his perspective starts to shift when he learns that the station he works for has been providing footage to the FBI, a discovery that coincides with Cassellis’s chance meeting with a young boy. As Cassellis becomes acquainted with the child’s mother, he realizes that she possesses meaningful qualities that some of his glamorous girlfriends have lacked. When he takes a freelance job during the convention, his private life collides with the confusion and chaos of the historic event. The form of this brilliant hybrid film, which fuses documentary footage and scripted plots, is as stirring as its thesis.  ST
