NEW DOCS

Filmed over four years, directors Alina Gorlova, Simon Mozgovyi, and Yelizaveta Smith have taken great care in assembling this cinematic essay on the war in Ukraine, down to the title itself—a word they coined from the Latin for “soldier” and the Greek for “human,” which they define as “a persona adopted by humans when entering a state of war.” What follows are observations of daily life that illustrate this phenomenon: people move through a train station as they evacuate from Kyiv; civilians learn how to use assault rifles; a farmer tills his field just feet from a spent missile. Elsewhere, two young girls feast on strawberries in a field dotted with wildflowers, and people return to their farms and homes. Taken together, these images— both deeply intimate and analytically detached—trace how people acclimate to their situations, quietly becoming part of war. WM
