By juxtaposing modern Moscow opulence with the harsh, bitter results of a decade of war in Chechnya, Sherip produces an affecting protest. The movie is Russian to its cinematic core, conjuring up memories of Kuleshov, Pudovkin and Eisenstein as it uses montage to stitch its images together and writing potency from them.
