Motley’s Law

NEW DOCS

For nine months out of the year, attorney and former beauty queen Kimberley Motley leaves her husband and three kids in Charlotte, North Carolina, and heads to Kabul, Afghanistan. There, the straight-talking, no-nonsense lawyer—the first and only foreigner (and the first and only woman) licensed to litigate in Afghan courts—navigates death threats, national turmoil, and a tangled web of bureaucracy and corruption in order to defend both Western and Afghan clients. Motley admits that she initially went to Afghanistan for the money, but over time the financial incentive morphed into a personal mission to fight for human rights within the poorly run, confusing legal system. Now, the impending withdrawal of international troops from Afghanistan makes Motley’s work all the more precarious. With a family at home, how much is she willing to risk in her pursuit of justice?  EM
