My Enschede

NEW DOCS

There wasn’t much for filmmaker Astrid Bussink to pack on May 13, 2000, the day she planned to leave Enschede and settle in Amsterdam. A fireworks depot close to her home had just exploded, killing 23 people, injuring 1,000, and destroying 200 homes, including her own. Nearly ten years later, Bussink’s curiosity leads her back to Enschede and the unanswered question: who is to blame? Townspeople, still clearly affected by the disaster, have their own (conspiracy) theories about the event. Meanwhile, Bussink is determined to find André de Vries, the man accused but later acquitted of fueling the explosion. Framed by the director’s personal experience, My Enschede is a portrait of a community dealing with the lingering effects of an unresolved tragedy.  SB
