Night Ride

NEW DOCS
When filmmaker Todd Karehana discovers his mother’s strange nightly ritual—feeding the stray cats near his childhood home—he becomes her accomplice in an effort to understand how this undertaking may be connected to the death of his brother. Car idling, their shadowy faces glow as cats slink through empty streets. Yet the mysterious movements of the night are tempered by an affecting familiarity between mother and son as they quarrel and tease, exploring different roles in their evolving parent-child dynamic. While contemporary scenes are shot in black and white, Karehana journeys with his mother into a nostalgic past in colorful home footage. In captivating, charming detail, Night Ride offers insight into the beautiful devotion that comes from joining together in unfolding grief. KL
