No Crossover: The Trial of Allen Iverson

Invited

Around the time Steve James was directing his acclaimed film Hoop Dreams, another basketball story was unfolding in his hometown of Hampton, Virginia. In 1993, three years away from the NBA, high school star athlete Allen Iverson got caught up in a racially charged bowling alley brawl that landed him in jail. The incident and subsequent trial divided the city along racial lines. Sixteen years later, James returns to his hometown to examine the lasting fallout from the events, interviewing people on both sides of the conflict. Childhood coaches, community leaders, lawyers, and reporters offer very different—and sometimes heated—takes on the trial. The result is a penetrating exploration of race, one made more complex by the expectations and pressures put upon talented athletes, filtered through the lens of a talented filmmaker with a personal interest in the story.  ST
