Oblivion

NEW DOCS

“I see history as a badly mixed cocktail,” explains a veteran bartender in Lima, Peru. “Made of semi-democratic elections, coups, terrorism, and corruption.” Dutch filmmaker Heddy Honigmann returns to the city of her birth to find a resilient people clinging fiercely to their pride despite the shattered society in which they live. Determined not to fade into oblivion under the oppressive and irresponsible policies of their elected officials, the working-class people of Lima movingly assert their presence in small, everyday acts of resistance. A bartender, a leather repairman, a presidential sash-maker, and a street vendor: their will to survive comes through in alternately charming and devastating interviews. Honigmann combines these interviews and shots of city life with footage from presidential inaugurations and various political and economic disasters, creating a beautiful, brutally honest portrait of modern day Peru.  SB
