The picturesque village of Malmberget in northern Sweden is slowly but surely sinking into the hollow underground substrates left by its legacy as a mining town, and its residents have been directed to leave their homes. The film’s directors return to the town, which they previously documented in 2013, bringing a familial and earnest perspective to their poetic premise: the industry that brought the town into existence is the cause of its abandonment. Exquisitely photographed, the film’s painterly visual motifs and contemplative wintry landscapes are punctuated by vibrant and indelible imagery. An unhurried pace and moody score bring bittersweet harmonies and rhymes to this ballad of Malmberget and the measured depiction of its final, gracefully ephemeral, days. TM
