One Shot: The Life and Work of Teenie Harris

NEW DOCS

“One shot and that’s enough.” Those are the signature words of one of the most important African American photographers of this century, Teenie Harris. Born and raised in Pittsburgh, Penn., Harris began his career as a photographer in the early 1940s. Through his photographs and his films he captured the life of African Americans and others living, working, and visiting in the “District” area of Pittsburgh. In addition to having his own studio, he was first a freelancer, then a staff photographer for the number one African American newspaper in the country, the Pittsburgh Courier. This documentary will take the viewer back in time, and into the African American world of the 40s, 50s and 60s, a world that was not often photographed or reported on in mainstream media. Harris’s legacy of photos are captivating and draw one into the past.  WR
