Open Outcry

NEW DOCS

Innovative technique meets unlikely subject matter—the Chicago Mercantile Exchange and its denizens. It’s a pressure-cooker workplace, but more than that, it’s a self-contained culture, with its own national costume, gestural language, rhythms and values. Director Jon Else dispenses with conventional documentary elements like on-camera interviews, instead immersing the viewer in long shots of the hectic, noisy environment. The digital cinematography—its saturated color, revelatory framing and graceful shifts of focus—is nothing less than dazzling.
