Ôte-toi de mon soleil

NEW DOCS

Monsieur Joseph Rosenzweig has Diogenes syndrome, a behavioral condition that manifests itself in hoarding and self-neglect. Filmmaker Messaline Raverdy meets Joseph when she comes to organize his overwhelming belongings. Shot on Super 8, the camera details the disorienting confusion of his home, which sometimes feels like being caught in an undertow. Joseph is trepidatious around strangers, but eventually his inner life peeks through the disorder: he is fond of mathematical principles and often speaks in philosophical abstraction. With endearing patience, Messaline accepts his meandering verbosity, and her provoking edit incorporates archival footage that highlights moments of both chaos and profundity. As the friendship between them blossoms, the twinkle in Joseph’s eye returns. KL
