Paradox Lake
Thematic Hybrid: A New Film Form Curated by Mary Lea Bandy
Highly original and impossible to classify, the film dares to plunge into the world of autism, in a verité-style study of the experience of a counselor at Paradox Lake, an upstate New York summer camp for autistic children. Part psycho-drama, part documentary, part sci-fi, the film mystifies its protagonists, and its viewers, until one is well caught up by its layers that begin to peel away and reveal beauty and truth as they hypnotize its viewers. Actors who trained as counselors join actual counselors and adolescents in an improvisational structure weaving documentary and experimental techniques in an extraordinarily imaginative probe into minds that cannot communicate in ordinary ways.
