Photograph of Jesus

NEW DOCS

The Hulton Archive/Getty Images is home to some 60 million images that span the entire history of photography and preserve our cultural memory. Stop-motion animation whisks viewers through narrows halls, stacked to the brim and crowded with card catalogs, filing cabinets, and photo boxes, as an archivist shares the bizarre and sometimes comical requests that cross his desk: a photograph of Jesus, for example, or perhaps a dodo. “They’re never going to get that picture,” an archivist admits, unapologetic, as photographs spring to life—conveying the absurdity of such inquiries. A pure delight, this film is a snapshot of the historical moments we re-imagine and the impossible truths we haphazardly believe.  SB
