NEW DOCS

This film is an extraordinary documentary of life in the Lodz Ghetto during the Nazi occupation of Poland. The film uses a remarkable, recently discovered collection of color slides made by Walter Genewein, the Ghetto’s chief Nazi accountant who observed the people of the Ghetto with a cold, calculating eye. Genewein’s pictures are juxtaposed with the voice of the film’s narrator, Arnold Mostowics, a Jewish medical doctor who survived the Lodz Ghetto and concentration camps. Mostowics offers eloquent memories of the scenes at hand. The images produced by the meticulous Nazi accountant and the difficult words spoken by the sorrowing doctor render a painful truth that the film’s director calls a “documentary about human consciousness.” The film’s power comes from the riveting tension between the two perspectives.
