Radiograph of a Family
NEW DOCS
Iranian director Firouzeh Khosrovani, the child of a secular father and devout Muslim mother, revisits her parents’ relationship to examine the chasm between them and the spaces that they shared. The family home sits at the center of the story, bearing witness to an evolving marriage in pre- and post-revolutionary Iran. Khosrovani layers archival footage, family photographs, and audio performances to re-create memories of her parent’s relationship. Her perspective hovers between their worlds, allowing us to consider the ways in which Tayi and Hossein yielded to one another throughout their marriage, while pointing to how parallel political and cultural tensions between traditionalism and modernization were playing out in Iran. Carefully executed camera movements within reconstructed, changing interiors reveal how their lives collided and transformed over time. Khosrovani’s beautifully crafted portrait is deeply intimate while also imbued with the impact of the revolution on Iranian society at large. SO
