Rat Rod

A person wearing a tee shirt in a dimly lit garage

NEW DOCS

When Jorge Ramirez was a young boy, his family had to move quickly and unexpectedly from Mexico to Utah. The only thing that he brought with him was a bike he had painstakingly assembled one piece at a time from parts salvaged over many months. Decades later, the bike holds a place of honor in Jorge’s garage, where he now creates impressive “rat rods” (unique hot rod cars) that are built from scratch and have an unfinished look. Jorge lives next to a cemetery and often hears strange sounds and noises that he cannot explain. This strikingly filmed short skillfully engages the mystery, capturing the evocative smoky glow of his workspace as Jorge reflects frankly on the difficulty of his and his parents’ immigration experiences, the process of forging a sense of place, and notions of rebirth.  WM
