Thematic The Weight of a Question: Documentary and the Art of Inquiry

A letter from the man onscreen to his mother underpins Akosua Adoma Owusu’s poignant examination of love, acceptance, and belonging. Written and performed by Kwame Edwin Otu, Owusu’s beautifully grained black-and-white cinematography intimately observes him writing at a table, washing his body with a rich soapy lather, and lying naked with a lover. In voiceover, he wrestles with the chasm between the nourishment of his mother’s love and the pain of her disapproval. As he describes his isolation in a new country, far away from her, he asks, “Where do I call home?”  ST
