NEW DOCS

Director Eric Daniel Metzgar offers a nuanced and eye-opening reflection on the moral imperative to report real news, not just infotainment rubbish. His subject, Nicholas Kristof, the New York Times columnist who almost single-handedly brought international attention to the crisis in Darfur, takes us and two likeable “Win-a-Trip” observers to report on the misery and violence in eastern Congo in the summer of 2007. Recognizing that the only way he can make the world pay attention to the appalling political situation in Congo is to make it personal, Kristof seeks out individuals whose desperate stories bear witness to the horror. As they travel the ravaged landscape and even pay a terrifying visit to the reigning rebel warlord, Kristof and the film crew make a compelling case for just how crucial real reporting is in today’s world.  SB
