Resurrect Dead: The Mystery of the Toynbee Tiles

NEW DOCS

All around the city of Philadelphia, as well as around the world, tiles have been embedded in the sidewalks and streets, each referencing the same cryptic message: Toynbee Idea/ In Movie 2001/ Resurrect Dead/ On Planet Jupiter. Who is creating these tiles and what does their message mean? Filmmaker John Foy takes us on a classic whodunit adventure, following three unlikely heroes dedicated to finding the elusive creator of the tiles. The enthusiasm of the amateur trio is contagious and we delight in their old-fashioned sleuthing methods (Microfiche! Short Wave Radio!). As their obsession grows and they narrow the search to three suspects, we are surprised and touched by the sensitivity with which they treat their reclusive prey. Foy’s small revelations are expertly paced and, with its spirited animation and music, the film feels like a comic-book page-turner, complete with its very own superheroes.  RM
