Rough Aunties

NEW DOCS

With extraordinary empathy and grace, this film portrays a group of women in Durban, South Africa, who are dedicated to bringing child abusers and rapists to justice and healing the victims. The audience gets to know the “aunties” of the Operation Bobbi Bear advocacy organization, based on observation of them working with victims, accompanying law enforcement on raids to arrest the perpetrators, and supporting each other through tough times. Thoughtful editing and intimate access are the backbone of a film that never simplifies, overstates, or hectors its audience. The women are determined fighters, showing that working together toward their goal of justice and fairness is worth the battle. For them, each child deserves to be saved, and no tears are ever wasted.  NK
