Sacco and Vanzetti
NEW DOCS
Two immigrants are accused of murder and electrocuted after a trial widely recognized as pervaded by intolerance and prejudice. The xenophobia and flagrant abuse of civil liberties takes place in a country that prides itself on being the melting pot of the world and the beacon of democracy for the globe. The story could easily occur now, considering the rising swell of anti-immigration rhetoric and policy since 9/11. But the subjects at the heart of this documentary, Nicola Sacco and Bartolomeo Vanzetti, were Italian immigrants, anarchists, and passionate writers killed by the American justice system in 1920. A beautifully rendered tale of tragic injustice, the film makes the historical uncannily present through interviews, music, poetry, and by interweaving readings of Sacco and Vanzetti’s powerful prison writings.
