Salero

NEW DOCS

Moises works in one of the most ethereal and breathtakingly beautiful places in the world: Bolivia’s Salar de Uyuni, the largest salt flat on the planet. He is struck daily by its magnitude and majesty, asserting that even Neil Armstrong could see Uyuni sparkling back at him from Earth when he landed on the moon. Moises comes from a long line of salt gatherers, or saleros, stretching back well beyond his grandfather’s grandfather. Unfortunately, it appears he will not be able to pass this trade down to his sons, as Bolivia’s president has approved a robust mining venture to extract lithium from beneath the flat’s salt crust. Moises reluctantly witnesses his brother shift from salero to salt-souvenir salesman. As we watch this mesmerizingly cinematic reflection of a man at a crossroads, we wonder if Moises must trade in his pickaxe too.  WFM
