Shake Hands with the Devil: The Journey of Roméo Dallaire
NEW DOCS Thematic Why War? Curated by Cara Mertes
In 1994, approximately 800,000 people were brutally slaughtered in Rwanda. Most belonged to the Tutsi tribe, though many of the victims were moderate Hutus who refused to participate in the genocide. Canadian Lieutenant General Roméo Dallaire was the leader of a small United Nations presence. Refusing to leave, he stayed to offer protection to the few people he could save as the genocide unfolded around him. In early 2004, he returned to Rwanda for the first time since those events, a life-altering experience he chronicled in his book, Shake Hands with the Devil: The Failure of Humanity in Rwanda. CM
