This program explores binding ties of family, indelible connections to place, and evolving practices of tradition. In The Mute’s House, directed by Tamar Kay, an eight-year-old boy and his mother are the last Palestinian residents of a deserted apartment building in the Israeli-controlled district of Hebron. Despite threats and a complicated system of borders, they maintain their family unit and persevere with spirit and humor. In A House Without Snakes, directed by Daniel Koehler, two young men in Botswana wrestle with the choice between honoring ancestral traditions or pursuing modern possibilities. The conflict between their desires for new opportunities and connections to their homeland plays out in Koehler’s film with sensitivity and intimacy. Finally, in Dancing for You, directed by Erlend E. Mo, a young girl propels her tender relationship with her ailing grandfather into dance, taking on a challenging folk tradition typically reserved for men as she attempts to inspire her beloved grandpa with her passion for dance and for life.
