Shorts: Man + Nature

NEW DOCS
Through films both playful and profound, this program explores the sometimes collaborative, sometimes contentious, relationship between humans and the natural world. In The Art of Flying, directed by Jan van Ijken, we witness the mysterious phenomenon of starling murmurations, a majestic ornithological gesture in which thousands of birds flock together in gyroscopic unison. In Pickle, director Amy Nicholson introduces us to Tom and Debbie Nicholson, who reminisce with joy and good humor about the parade of pets with bizarre afflictions they have taken in over the years. In Territory, directed by Eleanor Mortimer, a battle is waged between man and monkey: Tensions flare when unruly Barbary macaques intrude upon the domesticated lifestyle of their human neighbors. Finally, in La Laguna, directed by Aaron Schock, a Mayan boy explores the Lacandon jungle of southern Mexico with his little brother and grapples with the effects of development on his family’s traditional subsistence ways of living.
