This powerful program offers an eye-opening look at urgent social issues in the United States, from voting rights and immigration to gun control and incarceration. The Black Belt, directed by Margaret Brown, follows a mobile unit in Alabama as it travels county to county to help register the predominately black voters affected by the state’s closure of 31 DMVs. I, Destini, directed by Nicholas Pilarski and Destini Riley, employs animation and autobiography to take us inside the experiences of a young woman in Durham, North Carolina, as she confronts the wrenching impact of her brother’s imprisonment. Maxim Pozdorovkin’s Clínica de Migrantes: life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness presents a moving depiction of the work of Puentes de Salud, a volunteer-run clinic that provides health care to the uninsured Latino community of South Philadelphia. And Speaking is Difficult, directed by AJ Schnack, concludes the program. Contrasting serene present-day footage of sites of mass shootings with recordings of 911 calls, Schnack’s film offers a staggering indictment of gun violence in America.
