Singing Wings
NEW DOCS
In a small village in Iran, a 78-year-old Kurdish woman, Khadijeh, takes in an injured stork after it collides with the town’s high-voltage power lines. As its mate perches among the trees scrutinizing the care his partner is receiving, the clock is ticking—the stork’s flock will soon leave for the winter. Khadijeh’s persistence is equal parts endearing and comical: she cajoles the local kids to go fishing when she can’t find find the right type of fish at the town’s market; when the vet tells her the stork needs an X-ray, she refuses to take no for an answer from a radiologist who insists the machine is solely for humans. Khadijeh’s efforts are mirrored by her care for her ailing husband, and with her daughter contemplating a move abroad, the notion of migration takes a human turn in this film full of unexpected joy, whimsy, and warmth.
