Speaking is Difficult

NEW DOCS

“Speaking is difficult,” said former Arizona congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords, a victim of gun violence, in an appeal to Congress on gun control, “but I need to say something important. . . . Too many children are dying.” This short film, which takes its name from Giffords’s speech, succeeds in showing us the epidemic of gun violence in a new way by juxtaposing tranquil images of towns affected by mass shootings after they have returned to normalcy with audio from the initial 911 calls reporting the shootings. The right to own firearms has been constantly in debate in the wake of these tragedies, which the film makes evident are numerous. As the calls intensify, the audio becomes both harrowing and heartbreaking, and you’re left without a doubt that when it comes to gun violence, there is no debate.  BD
