Speedo

Full Frame Audience Award Feature 2003

NEW DOCS

Speedo is a man burdened with worries: he maintains a full-time job at the local garage, his marriage is fizzling, and his punk-rocker son has just dyed his hair pink. But what really bothers Speedo is that he never wins the “Fan’s Choice” award at the demolition derby nights at the track. In this simultaneously humorous and distressing film, Speedo’s obsession with earning recognition through rebuilding and then demolishing cars puts him at odds with the world around him. He has reduced his life to two favorite pastimes: destroying cars and crashing relationships. Speedo is a captivating and disturbing portrait of American culture’s self-destructive obsession with automobiles, mobility, and disposability.  TW
