STALINGRAD — Die Trilogie: 1. Der Angriff 2. Der Kessel 3. Der Untergang
NEW DOCS
The historic Battle of Stalingrad as it has never been seen before. German and Soviet soldiers who survived the battle tell the haunting story of this turning point in World War II, when Hitler’s Sixth Army advanced on Stalingrad in the fall of 1942 and was surrounded by a million Red Army soldiers. By the end of the 53-day siege, half a million Soviet soldiers and 200,000 German troops had been killed, had frozen to death (in temperatures of -40°C), or had died of starvation (many survived by eating horse and human flesh). Verbal testimonies and letters home from the battlefield attest to unspeakable horrors as well as unexpected gestures of humanity—like the Jewish doctor who saves the lives of her German prisoner-of-war patients. These moving personal accounts are accompanied by archival footage and chilling original radio broadcasts that document the way Hitler’s Third Reich abandoned an army of 300,000 men. MP
