Steal This Story, Please! looks at the career of Amy Goodman, co-founder, host, and executive producer of Democracy Now! Originally created in 1996 as a radio news hour broadcast to nine stations, the show is now distributed to more than 1,500 television and radio stations. Audience funded and commercial free, the program accepts no corporate or government funding—an anomaly in modern media, where conglomerates tend to hold all the power. In observing Goodman’s important work, Carl Deal and Tia Lessin review the moments that have shaped her path: Goodman reflects on her time at the high school newspaper and early beginnings in radio and on the stories that reset her trajectory—including the pivotal experience of reporting the East Timor Massacre, which underscored for her the imperative to witness and document events as they happen. The film shares the perspectives of colleagues and journalists whom Goodman has worked with and inspired, as it upholds the belief that news media should represent a diversity of voices so that audiences have the information they need to make up their own minds.
