The answering machine is the veritable waste bin of our social lives, the place where disregarded intimacies get tossed and lost. In this poignant ode to fleeting moments and missed opportunities, filmmaker Mark Craig has compiled 20 years’ of ostensibly disposable greetings left on his answering machine. Talk to Me is a technical tour de force, combining the filmmaker’s unusual audio archive with long takes as the camera glides across an ever-changing terrain of snapshots. As friends and family unwittingly reveal the story of a man growing into middle-age, the camera’s intricate choreography transforms the still photographs into a cinematic experience.
