The Devil Came on Horseback
NEW DOCS Thematic Africa Stories Curated by Nancy Buirski
Former Marine captain Brian Steidle takes us face to face with the genocide of Darfur. Signed on with the African Union to observe the 2004 ceasefire in Sudan, he is armed with just a camera, paper, and pen. His challenge is to incite action with data, images, and facts. What does it take for the world to react and what is the role of the witness? The film presents the historical and economic basis for the Sudanese government’s support and encouragement of the Janjaweed militia’s atrocities alongside UN and US debates on the definition of “genocide.” Meanwhile, millions of people are displaced, maimed, and terrorized in attacks sanctioned by the government. The festering need for global intervention is laid bare by Steidle’s haunting, harrowing images from the ground. DS
