The Devil Came On Horseback

Career Award Ricki Stern and Annie Sundberg

Former Marine captain Brian Steidle takes us deep inside the genocide of Darfur, armed with just a camera, paper, and pen. Signed on with the African Union merely to observe the 2004 ceasefire in Sudan, Steidle discovers atrocities that incite him to action. He painstakingly collects data and facts to provoke an international reaction. But despite the searing evidence Steidle brings to light, the US and the UN debate the definition of “genocide” even as millions of people continue to be displaced, terrorized, and killed in attacks sanctioned by the Sudanese government. The festering need for global intervention is laid bare by the haunting, harrowing images from the ground. As the film explores the question, “What is the role of the witness?” we are inspired by Steidle’s wholesale transformation from observer to passionate activist.  RM
