The Emperor’s Naked Army Marches On
Thematic Power of Ten Curated by Michael Moore
This extremely controversial and innovative film premiered in Tokyo in 1987. The documentary traces the efforts of Okuzaki Kenzõ to chronicle war crimes, including murder and cannibalism, committed by Japanese soldiers in occupied New Guinea during World War II. The film breaks cultural taboos and deals more frankly than ever with atrocities committed by the Imperial Army. This was the first Japanese film to confront this history of the Emperor’s war, the abuse of soldiers, and the issues of dissention and desertion with such indignant, relentless force.
