Toto has toiled as a gold miner in the harsh climate of Chile’s Tierra del Fuego for the last 40 years. The conditions are not only cold and wet, but the work is also arduous and dangerous. Toto is a sympathetic figure who draws us in with his soft demeanor and introspective journal entries, but his close relationship with his son, Jorge, is the crux of this film. After Toto suffers a stroke, Jorge insists that his father listen to his doctor’s advice and stop working at the mine. However, with few other job prospects, Toto must continue to work in order to survive and pay for his medical expenses. Jorge decides that the solution to his father’s problems is a gold-harvesting machine, and given the hefty price tag for acquiring one, he takes it upon himself to build one. Jorge’s endeavor spans years, as the father and son race against the clock of Toto’s worsening illness.  BD
