The Fence

Career Award Liz Garbus Rory Kennedy

In 2006, Congress passed the Secure Fence Act, authorizing the U.S. government to build a 700-mile fence along its Mexico border. Its ostensible purpose was to stem the tide of illegal immigrants, drugs, and terrorism, but filmmaker Rory Kennedy finds that in reality all the fence has done is cause the deaths of over 25,000 migrants attempting to cross it. This gigantic eyesore has cost taxpayers over $3 billion already and will take an additional $26 billion to maintain over the next 25 years. And the absurd truth, both humorously and tragically revealed in this cogent film, is that we are probably no safer as a result.  BD
